Recently, the government has been encouraging setting up of industries in regional/ rural areas. It justifies its decision saying that this would help in the development of that area.
The selection of locality for an industrial site has a large impact on the business.
There are many facilities which are available only in the urban areas which make many promoters to prefer city as the location of the industrial unit like better transportation facilities, banking facilities, medical facilities, cold storage, municipal services etc. Moreover moving an entire industrial unit from an urban area to a rural area costs a lot.
But things aren’t that easy in the city also. The prices of land are high and even at high prices, sufficient land is not acquired which leads to congestion. The cost of labor is high because of the high standard of living. In the city, high taxes are levied. The pollution level is high.
In rural areas, large plots of land are available at relatively lower prices which make installation of heavy plants and machinery possible.Cheap labor is available. A lot of taxes which are imposed in the cities are not levied in the rural areas. The emissions produced by industries are extremely hazardous. Many research institutes have proved that people living within a range of 10 kilometers of the industrial zone are at a much higher risk of getting cancers. Jobs opportunities are created for rural population adding to its income. Nearly 68% of India’s population lives in rural areas with India being home to 5 lac villages. Rural market is growing rapidly now.
Delocalisation of industries costs a lot but the merits of a rural site are higher than its demerits. However, it may not make sense for every business. They may find rural location just a thing to help their business grow.
