Learning a foreign language is the new trend these days. But what is the best time to start learning a new language? Some experts believe that it’s better for children to start learning a foreign language at the primary level than at secondary level while some say that it would be too burdensome for primary schools kids. But the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
It’s true that children aged 3-5 are more into playing than studying. But of course, if a new language other than the regional dialect is introduced in the syllabus, children would learn it for sure.
In order to command a language, practice is needed. At primary level, it’s easy to learn as for children aged 3-8 years, their grasping ability is more, almost twice as fast as a secondary school student. Moreover, it ‘s not a burden at all because kids aren’t introduced to maths, history, science at primary level. So they can learn different languages with ease.
A secondary school student has to learn other subjects also like maths, history, politics, chemistry, physics etc which leaves little time for languages. It’s not that if you don’t learn a language at primary level, you won’t be able to learn a different language at all. But it obviously gives you an edge over other students. At Infosys, those who can speak English fluently are given preference for hiring. Their communication skills are better and are more confident. Learning a foreign language unlocks our brains. If you get placed in another country and you know their language, how easy that would be for you to communicate. You’ll obviously face fewer difficulties living there. If you go to study abroad, let’s say France, and you don’t know French, you won’t be able to communicate with others. English is the international language. People fluent in English always have an edge over others. Students at primary level can easily learn 3 languages. How else do you think Chinese speak English so fluently? They are given 3 foreign languages to study: English, german and french. That should be made mandatory in our country too. Because the positives are obviously way more than the few negatives.
