Logging of the rain forests is a serious problem and it may lead to the extinction of animal life and human life. Discuss.

PTE Writing Sample Essay – 

With increasing population, there’s an increase in demands of the people. To meet these demands, forests are cut down which has resulted in some serious problems. We are destroying the natural habitat of the wild animals so they are running into human habitat killing cattle and other animals. Attacks on humans have also been reported. But wild animals can not be held responsible. Humans are the ones who have disturbed the natural ecosystem and if we don’t stop anytime soon, the human kind would have to pay for it with its extinction. The rate at which the logging of the rain forests is taking place, the entire green cover would be swept from the earth. No trees, no oxygen, no rain, no water(ground water won’t be recharged), no animals and extinct humans.

Humans can adapt to change but many rain forest animals can not adapt to change which can result in the extinction of their species. Logging of rain forests is done illegally and is the best-known form of deforestation and damage to the rainforest ecosystem. Even if a few selected tree species are harvested(selective logging), the damage done is the same or may be twice. Felling of a single tree can bring down dozens of surrounding trees resulting in thinning of the canopy. The forest is exposed to increased sunlight and harsh winds as a result of thinning of this protective canopy, which kills essential soil organisms which are essential for decomposition and nutrient fixing while dry leaves make it vulnerable to fire.

Not only are trees cut down, but roads are constructed to transport timber which further results in soil erosion.

Rain forests are home to 80% of the earth’s land animals and plants which can not survive the deforestation that destroys their home. Half of the earth’s global forest land has already been lost threatening the survival of many species. Logging of rain forests has changed the climate and has resulted in an increase in global warming. If the mankind doesn’t mend its ways, soon the temperature of the earth would soar making survival impossible. We are headed towards our own extinction. It’s high time folks! We need to make responsible daily choices.
