PTE Essay – Excessive Use Of Cars & Alternative Forms Of Transport
What do we do if we wanna go somewhere? I mean, how? We take out our cars and hit the road. Very simple, isn’t it? But why are there talks about introducing international laws to control car ownerships? There are a lot of reasons and not one is invalid.
Around 14% of our land is used for housing and guess how much is used for roads? 12%. We can not keep building roads, can we, given our limited land constraints? Then we sweep forests for construction of roads.
It doesn’t matter if we have parking space in our houses, we just buy a car when we want to. Parking issues? Oh no! Road is there. We can just park our vehicle there. This is how we think. And what does this lead to? Vehicle congestion. Then we blame governments and others and much more others for the parking problems and pollution and every other problem we face.
Cars are not just a means of transport, they are a means to show off your money. Young brats can be seen flaunting their luxurious cars on roads, driving at a very slow speed, not caring about the traffic behind. More vehicles on roads mean more traffic jams and more noise and air pollution. People prefer their own cars over public transport, maybe because in India, majority of public transport is uncomfortable and labeled unsafe.
Cities all over the world are taking various measures to decongest their roads. In London, taking out your vehicle on the road is just too expensive. People prefer public transports to travel and their traffic has fallen by 20%. And where is our India headed? No one cares! When ministers take roads to go somewhere there are at-least 20 cars accompanying them.
The government needs to regulate car ownership for the sake of our environment. Public transport should be made cheaper and more comfortable. Government and people seriously need to think about it.
