Should Government Spend Money on Art

The controversy over public finance has grown in importance over the years. Whether art has importance within this factor or not can be discussed from various views, yet I firmly support the idea of funding artistic activities with government budgets.

Firstly, art encourages regional financial developments. Although other urgent issues, such as health or housing seems more valuable, art exhibitions or street arts could ultimately lead the local area to become richer by raising awareness of indigenous resources. Naoshima, an island located in the inland sea in Japan, is an example. An unknown island has improved its economy drastically since the government invested in the Naoshima Art Project. Thanks to the tourists from not only the neighbouring area but also from overseas. Many networks are now available to make use of the whole island, developing the infrastructure and transportation rapidly at the same time.

Secondly, it is a government’s responsibility to promote local culture. Funding art can be considered as well as financing natural resources, because of the relationships between them. For example, a system called ‘artists in residence’ facilitates artists in the local environment for a certain period so that they can work inspired by nature. The art-works produced may be advertised through media even abroad, providing good opportunities to maintain the indigenous culture. Thus art can play a significantly important role to support the region with beneficial results.

Overall, while I agree that there are many other factors that the government should look after, art should be equally considered as an important category to be funded by the public. I firmly believe that this would consequently be an advantage to the local society.
